🌟 How to hire AI as your intern

It’s more effective to consider AI as a person, rather than just software, despite it not being human. In this current AI era, billions of people have suddenly gained access to free interns—although these interns are odd, somewhat alien, and fast workers who sometimes lie to please you.

So, how can you make the most of your intern?

Like any new employee, you'll need to understand its strengths and weaknesses, learn to train and collaborate with it, and figure out where it’s useful and where it’s a hindrance. This is crucial, as AI can boost productivity in tasks like writing and coding by 30-80%, freeing you from tedious work.

Your AI intern’s value varies from person to person and task to task. For example, a strong writer may find no use for AI in writing, while someone struggling with a blank page might see it as a blessing. There’s no one-size-fits-all guide; you’ll have to explore and decide for yourself.

Your goal is to fill out this chart:

  • Just Me Tasks: These are tasks where AI is either useless or detracts from the work, or tasks that you believe should remain human-only. This category may shift as AI evolves.

  • Delegated Tasks: These are tasks you assign to AI with oversight. They’re usually tedious, low-priority tasks. AI’s improvements could make these tasks even easier to delegate.

  • Centaur Tasks: Named by Gary Kasparov, these combine human and AI efforts. For example, in technical writing, I use AI to refine sentences and find sources. This back-and-forth can spark new ideas and maintain momentum.

  • Automated Tasks: These are tasks left entirely to AI, without review. For instance, I might let AI handle certain emails or write Python programs. For now, this category is small due to AI’s mistakes, but it’s expected to grow.

Hiring your intern:

You need to choose an AI model to work with.

A good approach is to use one online AI that is connected to the internet, like Microsoft’s Bing in Creative Mode (GPT-4, connected to the internet), and one offline AI that is not connected to the internet, like GPT-4, or Anthropic's Claude. GPT-4 is powerful and neutral, while Claude has a longer memory and a friendly demeanor. For image creation, Midjourney is recommended. Code Interpreter, available in ChatGPT Plus, is also useful for data tasks.

Figuring out your intern’s job description:

You can start by asking AI what it can do, but its responses may be naive or contain errors. Instead, define its role at the start of each conversation.

For example: "Act as a marketing writer." This provides context and directs its responses.

Here are some examples of how to use this method.

Working with your intern:

Integrate AI into your work across all tasks, while considering company policies, ethics, and privacy concerns. Test it on various tasks and see how it performs.

The initial results may be disappointing. In practice, AI might give generic responses or makeup information.

But treat its errors like you would a person’s: point them out and ask for better. You can also request multiple outputs, such as ten distinct rewrites or various solutions to a data problem.

After 5-10 hours, many people find they "get it." This doesn’t mean they use AI constantly, but they understand how to leverage it effectively, either for occasional help or as a secret workhorse.

These prompts may help you master ChatGPT and create your AI intern.
